“No, ma’am. And I never said Parker was in an accident. I never said why I was here at all. You just jumped to that conclusion. Might I ask why?”

“Why? Because I’m a woman whose fiancé is on an out-of-town trip, for God’s sakes! You don’t know accidents are the first thing women think of when anybody with a badge shows up on their doorstep? Even if you’re not married, don’t you have a mother?”

“Yes, ma’am, I do. I mean, I’m not married but yes, of course I have a mother. And you’re right. Accidents are definitely the first thing women think of.”

He gave himself a mental shake. He knew this woman. Knew she preferred beer to champagne, ranch dressing to vinaigrette, mixed greens to iceberg lettuce salads. Blue jean shorts to Prada. But he didn’t know this woman. He’d observed from afar, compiling data. This was the first time he’d spoken to her, been near her. And for the first time, he wondered. Wondered why a woman who preferred blue jean shorts to Prada would be involved in any criminal activity calculated to make mega-money. Up close and personal, he could easily believe this woman would be just as happy in a modest subdivision home as in this specially designed beach house. Well, believing and proving were two different things. He had to get a grip.

“Then why are you here?”

“Ms. Shipton, what do you know about Quentin Ashland’s business dealings?”
